πŸ›‘οΈ Transit Insurance – What It Is & Why It Matters

When moving your vehicle internationally, it’s important to consider protecting your investment with Transit Insurance. While modern shipping is very safe, damage or loss can occur β€” and even a minor incident can result in thousands of dollars in costs.

The Reality of Shipping Risks

Global studies estimate that $30–50 billion is lost every year due to cargo damage and transit-related incidents. Even the safest carriers are subject to risks beyond their control, such as:

  • 🌧️ Severe weather conditions
  • 🌍 Natural disasters
  • βš™οΈ Mechanical failure
  • 🧍 Human error
  • πŸ“¦ Multiple handling points during transit

Who We Work With

To ensure our customers get the best protection available, Willship partners with:

  • NTI Marine Protect (policy underwriter)
  • Citycover / ABC Commsure Insurance Brokers (our insurance advocate)

Together, they provide one of the strongest transit insurance offerings in the international freight forwarding industry.

What’s Covered

The NTI Marine Protect policy offers Full Accidental Damage Cover. It includes loss or damage to goods while in transit:

  • Within Australia
  • On export from Australia
  • On import into Australia

Coverage begins the moment we take possession of your vehicle (either via pickup or depot drop-off), and ends when the vehicle is either:

  • Delivered to you, or
  • Collected by a transporter arranged by you (coverage ends when they take possession)

Policy Pricing

  • Premium: 1.75% of your nominated vehicle value plus freight charges
  • Minimum premium: AUD 455
  • Excess: AUD 500
  • (Note: The excess is not paid upfront β€” it’s deducted from any approved claim payout)

Why We Recommend It

Although taking out transit insurance is optional, we strongly recommend it.

For a relatively low cost, you get peace of mind knowing you're protected in the unlikely event of:

  • Vessel damage
  • Port-related incidents
  • Weather-related exposure
  • Accidental handling damage
  • Theft or total loss

It’s a small investment that could save you thousands.

In the Event of a Claim

In the unfortunate event that a claim is necessary:

  • You’ll be supported by Citycover’s 24-hour claims service
  • They act as your claims advocate to ensure you receive your full entitlement
  • Willship will assist with photo documentation, timelines, and incident support
